Biblical Sea Shanties ALBUM launch concert
April 13 and 14, 2024
On the Face of the Deep is ten original sea shanties, each of them based on biblical stories involving the sea. The shanty texts were written by biblical scholar and sailor Dr. Linford Stutzman, and the original music was written by members of Cantore a cappella ensemble. Stories of the sea and seafarers that we find in the Bible were written mostly from the viewpoint of people of Hebrew origin—people of the Land. As such, the biblical version of the stories reflect the Hebrews’ land-based identity, and sometimes reveal their suspicion or even fear of the sea. In order to shed fresh light on these stories, the ten sea shanties on this album tell the same stories, but from the point of view of the primarily pagan seafarers themselves. We hope you gain new appreciation for these stories, as rewritten by Dr. Stutzman in the voice of ancient Mediterranean seafarers, and as sung by Cantore—eight serious singers acting like salty sailors.

CANTORE MEN'S A CAPPELLA
Cantore (Latin for “singers”) is a group of men who love to sing. Its members come from many walks of life. Outside of singing, they teach, preach, program computers, farm, write, make art, lay stone, roast coffee, sell things, or are retired. Their common bond is making good a cappella music. Their repertoire is primarily sacred and draws from a variety of styles and traditions, from standard religious choral works, to international, classical, bluegrass gospel, spirituals, folk, hymn arrangements, and a few pop and secular numbers. They perform in churches, banquets, festivals, retirement communities, civic events, and more. Since 2002 they have performed over 300 times, and have toured as far as Pennsylvania, Ohio, Mississippi, Louisiana, and Florida.

OUR GROUP STYLE
Cantore has no conductor, per se. While one of its members gives primary direction, all members are involved in developing consensus on style and musical interpretation. Members often bring songs to rehearsals and make suggestions, expanding the repertoire and bringing new and interesting possibilities. Members switch voice parts occasionally, depending on the song.
